Kingbird - Kingbird (4 ½ stars)

Kingbird - The best, most inspiring LP of 2023 was released on December 27th, without fanfare and without any media attention at all. Even Google didn’t know anything. Kingbird? Top Secret. But on the box in which the enigmatically auratic, wondrous touching, involuntarily captivating work found its way to me at the beginning of January, complete with customs stamp, was the sender’s address: Patrick Crowson, Brooklyn, New York. Contact, correspondence, clarification of completely obscured circumstances. So: Kingbird is a band, a duo to be precise, consisting of songwriter Crowson, who is responsible for the lead vocals and guitar, and Josh Allen, with a higher voice and skill on keyboards and acoustic and electrically amplified string instruments, including slide guitar, which gives the tightly woven recordings an organic ensemble character, where everything flows and is difficult to pin down. It starts with the fact that the tracks usually have no real beginning and no succinct ending. They stalk each other,clandestinely, and they say goodbye just as unceremoniously. Even the fade-outs fade away early, as if they had an impatient life of their own. This conveys a feeling of incompleteness, of provisional. A feeling that is deceptive. He resisted the temptation to formulate and produce everything, says Crowson about the album, "It took on a life of its own and I just tried to stay out of its way.”

Bandcamp offers ‘Dark Folk’ as a possibly suitable style term for ‘Kingbird’. Or ‘Dark Country’. Neither is entirely wrong, after all Waylon and Willie are called to the witness stand, and quite a few phrases are reminiscent of the existential poetry of Townes Van Zandt: You lived your life one drink at a time. It sure is easier than just waiting around to die.
